Two years before her canon takes place, Catherine Cordell was living and working in Savannah, GA. She was in charge of the surgical residents at Riverland Hospital, a position of high responsibility. One of them, Andrew Capra, was prone to mistakes. Catherine told him he was not suitable as a surgeon and needed to find a new specialty. Capra came to her house to discuss her decision. Catherine offered him a beer, and later left to use the restroom before finishing her beer. While she was gone, Capra dropped Rohypnol into her beer. When Catherine came to, she was tied to her bed and Capra was raping her. To the side of her bed were surgical instruments.

There had been a series of rape-murders in Savannah that year. After the in-home rapes, the killer cut out the woman’s uterus while she was conscious and aware, then cut her throat. Catherine knew this. When Capra left the room, Catherine fought to free her hand from the rope and managed to slide it free after it had been made slick with her own blood. She used the scalpel to cut her other hand free and rolled off the bed to grab the handgun she kept there. When Capra returned, she shot him in the gut, then blacked out again from the Rohypnol. Catherine believed she then shot him point-blank in the eye. Capra turned out to be the killer, based on evidence found in his home, and there were no legal repercussions for Catherine.

Catherine then moved to Boston, MA, and Pilgrim Hospital. When her canon begins, two killings, identical to Capra’s series in Savannah, have happened in Boston, close to her home and Pilgrim Hospital. When Catherine comes to Haurvatat, she has just learned of these murders and treated the new killer’s latest victim, one he didn’t quite kill.

Catherine comes across as friendly but guarded when people first meet her. She’s cool and controlled in even the most stressful surgical or trauma setting, but when Savannah is even mentioned, she gets extremely upset and can’t collect herself. Therefore, she refuses to discuss what happened there, until the Boston detectives come to speak to her. She has severe PTSD, understandable given what happened to her, and as a result, she has a very hard time trusting men. She hasn't even been on a date in the intervening two years. She also has panic attacks when provoked by discussion of these killings or pictures of them.

Catherine is a tall, slender woman with coppery hair falling below her shoulders. Her right wrist has faded scars from where she pulled it free of the ropes binding her.
